An old Chinese guy with a pierced cheek through his mouth is one of the rituals during vegetarian festival here in Hatyai. The Hatyai Vegetarian Festival is an annual event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is believed that the vegetarian festival and its accompanying sacred rituals bestowed good fortunes upon those who religiously observe this rite. During this time, local residents strictly observe a 10-day vegetarian for the purpose of spiritual cleansing and merit-making and also want to promote stop killing animal life and eat vegetarian foods for a healthy life.
